This is a tool that not only helps view pictures but also read metadata about the picture provided by cameras.

PIE is a picture browser. It has features that let you view photo metadata and help file renaming. It is capable of extracting EXIF, XMP and IPTC from JPG, TIF and RAW images. The data is made available in an easily readable format on the display interface. While some of the data is standardized and is uniform across camera makes and models, the “makernote” part of the data is entirely up to the manufacturer and they do provide data in different formats. The standard part provides information on date and time pictures were taken, shutter speed and aperture or whether the flash was used. Unfortunately, the makernote has data that is usually of interest to photo enthusiasts. For example, this block contains data on program mode, white balance settings or lens data, is stored in a format that is proprietary. This data is easily read through software from the camera manufacturers. This utility has access to the makernote database of most prominent camera makers and thus is able to read the data out easily.

Besides just reading the data, the tool will let you edit data available through EXIF or IPTC files. You will be able to add and delete tags, do lossless rotate, embedded thumbnails could be read. Etc. is possible in a non-destructive manner. As you are able to study a photograph along with data on how they were captured, this could be a big help in learning. You could export the data in Excel or TXT files. If you wanted to keep that entire data private, it is possible to erase them from the EXIF files too. This is a very good product with its simple interface.
